Automatic Temperature Detection for COVID Safety
The Automatic Temperature Detection for COVID Safety pandemic has significantly impacted daily life, introducing new safety regulations. These include limiting the number of people allowed in enclosed spaces like offices, shops, and malls to maintain social distancing, and conducting mandatory temperature checks at entrances.
This project demonstrates an automatic temperature detection system for controlled entry. The system uses a temperature sensor to measure a person’s body temperature when they enter. If the temperature is below a set threshold, entry is granted; otherwise, entry is denied. The system also enforces a maximum occupancy limit in the room. Both the allowed temperature and the maximum number of people can be configured and monitored via a Bluetooth mobile app.
Key Features
-
Automatic contactless fever screening.
-
Occupancy monitoring and control.
-
Mobile app control for temperature and people limits.
-
Visual and motorized entry control.
-
Cost-effective and easy to install.
Hardware Components
-
Arduino Controller
-
MLX90614 Infrared Temperature Sensor
-
IR Distance Sensor
-
LCD Display
-
Driver Circuit
-
DC Motor (for door control)
-
Bluetooth Module (HC-05)
-
Jumper Wires & Connectors
Working Principle
-
Detection: The IR sensor detects a person approaching the entrance.
-
Temperature Check: The MLX90614 sensor measures body temperature without contact.
-
Decision:
-
If temperature < set threshold → Entry allowed.
-
If temperature ≥ threshold → Entry denied.
-
-
Occupancy Control: The system counts people entering/exiting and blocks entry if the maximum limit is reached.
-
Mobile App Control: Settings for temperature threshold and occupancy limit can be adjusted via Bluetooth.
Performance
-
Fever threshold set at 36°C, based on multiple studies.
-
Testing shows ~90.47% accuracy compared to a standard in-ear thermometer.
-
Current IR sensor precision: ±0.5°C.
-
Potential upgrade: medical-grade IR sensor with ±0.2°C accuracy.
Applications
-
Office building entrances
-
Shopping malls
-
Schools and universities
-
Public event venues
-
Factories and warehouses
