Mifra electronics store Eye Blink Sensor EYE Sensor kit consists of a 3-pin female header. This eye blink sensor senses the eye blink using infrared. The variation across the eye will vary as per eye blink. If the eye is closed, the output is high otherwise the output is low.

Blinking is a bodily function; it is a semi-autonomic rapid closing of the eyelid.A single blink is determined by the forceful closing of the eyelid or inactivation of the levator palpebrae superioris and the activation of the palpebral portion of the orbicularis oculi, not the full open and close. It is an essential function of the eye that helps spread tears across and remove irritants from the surface of the cornea and conjunctiva.

Blinking may have other functions since it occurs more often than necessary just to keep the eye lubricated. Researchers think blinking may help us disengage our attention; following blink onset, cortical activity decreases in the dorsal network and increases in the default-mode network, associated with internal processing.Blink speed can be affected by elements such as fatigue, eye injury, medication, and disease. The blinking rate is determined by the “blinking center”, but it can also be affected by external stimulus.

Some animals, such as tortoises and hamsters, blink their eyes independently of each other. Humans use winking, the blinking of only one eye, as a form of body language. Early humans had a function where during the blink, a secondary eyelid would emerge from the lacrimal gland and wipe any dirt/dust out in the split millisecond of the blink. However, humans are currently evolving out of this trait.

How does Python detect eye blink?
The ROI (Region Of Image) of Face is fed to eye detection part of algorithm. Eyes are detected and resulting list is passed to if-else contruct. If the length of list is more than two, means that the eyes are there. Else the program is marked to be eye blinked and restarted.
Working:
The eye blink sensor illuminates the eye with infrared light and monitors the changes in the reflected light. The infrared light reflected from the eye is used to determine the results. The sensor output is active high for Eye close and can be given directly to microcontroller for interfacing application (e.g. buzzer).

Which sensor is used in eye blink sensor?
EYE BLINK SENSOR: This eye blink sensor is based on IR. It consists of an IR transmitter and IR receiver. The eye blink sensor illuminates the eye with infrared light and monitors the changes in the reflected light.
The detector receives a relatively unobstructed beam during forward gaze, producing an output in the 4–5 V range (upper row, time zero), but drops in voltage when the beam is broken by the lowering upper lid during a blink or looking downward.
What is the frequency of eye blinking?
Normal blink frequency is on the order of 9 to 13 per minute in the daytime, 5,15 increasing to 20 to 30 per minute in sleep-deprived subjects or patients with abnormal sleep patterns. On repeat testing, most of the patients showed a small increase in the number of blinks.
